About Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival

The Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival (officially known as the Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition) is one of Japan's three major fireworks festivals. With a history dating back to 1925, it was established to commemorate the spirits of fallen Air Force soldiers and to revitalize the economy of Tsuchiura.

Moreover, the festival attracts approximately 450,000 people from Japan and abroad every year. Uniquely held in the fall, this festival offers a comfortable experience for those who prefer to avoid the humid heat of summer.

Highlights of the Festival

Rapid-fire Fireworks (Star Mine Fireworks)

Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival

The charm of Tsuchiura's fireworks festival lies in the high-speed firing of fireworks called Star Mines. This fireworks festival is also known as the competition to determine Japan's best Star Mine. Since the Star Mine division became an independent competitive category in 1959, fireworks artists from all over Japan have showcased their skills in this intense competition. The sight of numerous fireworks being set off at such high speed is truly a sight to behold.

Size 10 Ball

This is the largest firework to be launched at the Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival. The Size 10 firework ball measures 30 centimeters in diameter and creates a large flower 300 meters in diameter in the night sky. Additionally, this year's festival schedule includes launching 45 of these impressive fireworks.

Best Viewing Spots

For the best fireworks viewing experience, consider the reserved seats located in front of the main venue, particularly those situated directly in front of the Star Mine launch site. Please check the official website for details on purchasing tickets.

However, tickets are sold by lottery. If you are unable to purchase tickets this way, there are private paid seats available on the north side of the main venue. Although these seats are a bit farther from the fireworks site, making it difficult to experience the synchronization of fireworks and music, you can still fully enjoy the display.

Getting there from Tokyo

From Tokyo, you can easily reach Tsuchuchiura Station, near the site of the Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival 2024, by train.

Specifically, It takes about 1 hour to travel from Tokyo Station to Tsuchiura Station on the Ueno-Tokyo Line's special rapid train bound for Tsuchiura.
