Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival 2024

Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival

This fireworks display began in 1970 as the eve of the Sendai Tanabata Festival. Held in the city, it is one of Sendai's most representative events, attracting approximately 450,000 visitors from Japan and overseas every year. There will also be food stalls set up around the fireworks venue, where you can enjoy Japanese festival food such as cotton candy, shaved ice, yakisoba, and takoyaki.

Where to watch fireworks

Sendai West Park

This is the most popular spot to watch the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival. There are both paid seats and free entry areas, and being close to the fireworks display venue allows for an impressive view. Therefore, it gets very crowded.

Access: 20 minutes walk from Sendai station

Hirose do-ri Avenue

On the night of the fireworks festival, the main street in front of Nishi Koen becomes a pedestrian paradise. However, many people gather there, as well as in Nishi Park, making it very crowded.

Access: 10 minutes walk from Sendai station

Hirose River Kawauchi Green Space

This spot is located on the north side of the fireworks venue, so it's relatively empty, allowing you to enjoy the fireworks at your leisure. You can watch the fireworks from various locations, such as the riverbed of the Hirose River or a bridge.

Access: 10 minutes walk from International Center Station
