Hokokuji Temple: Enjoy a Beautiful Bamboo Garden and Matcha

Hokokuji is one of the must-visit temples in the Kamakura area. Let me share the charm of the temple!

What is Hokokuji?

Hokokuji Temple is a Zen temple founded in 1334 by Ashikaga Ietoki, a grandfather of Ashikaga Takauji who was a founder of the Murimachi Shogunate. There is a cemetery in the cave behind the temple where the Ashikaga family, including the founder Ashikaga Ietoki, are buried.

Hokokuji Temple is also known for its beautiful bamboo garden, and there are about 2,000 bamboo trees. It has been awarded 3 stars in the Michelin Green Guide. There are only two places in Kamakura that have won 3 stars, so it is a must-visit place when sightseeing in Kamakura.

The precincts are not that large and you can visit in about 5 to 10 minutes, but the beautifully maintained bamboo garden and stone garden are masterpieces.

Try Matcha

As you walk through the bamboo garden, you will see a tea house where you can have matcha and dry Japanese sweets while enjoying the beautiful view of the bamboo garden.

When you arrive at the tea house, give your matcha ticket at the reception. You'll be asked to wash and sanitize your hands before being ushered to your seat, so it's helpful to have a handkerchief or hand towel with you.

Matcha is not too bitter, it has a refreshing taste and goes well with dry Japanese sweets.
The superb view of the bamboo garden from the seat and matcha will blow away the fatigue of walking around Kamakura.
